Kiwanis
International delegates
elected officers for the 2009-10 Kiwanis
year in Nashville at the Kiwanis International Convention. They
will officially take office on Oct. 1, 2009
- Paul Palazzolo, of
Springfield, Ill. as Kiwanis
International President 2008-10
Paul Palazzolo,
auditor of Sangamon County, Ill., and a licensed real estate broker, is
past-distinguished president of the Kiwanis Club of
Springfield-Downtown, Ill., served as governor of the Illinois-Eastern
Iowa District in 1994-95, as district secretary and district treasurer
and as president of the district foundation board. He is a life member
of Kiwanis International and a Diamond-level George F. Hixson Fellow,
Tablet of Honor recipient and Heritage Society member of the Kiwanis
International Foundation.
- Sylvester Neal, Auburn,
Wash., president-elect
Sylvester Neal, a retired Alaska state fire marshal, has belonged
to the Kiwanis Club of the Valley, Auburn, since 2003. He is a former
member of the Kiwanis clubs of Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, and was
Kiwanian of the Year four times. He served as governor of the Pacific
Northwest District in 2002-03, and is a life member of Kiwanis
International.
- Alan Penn
Medina, Ohio
Vice President
Alan Penn, a faculty member in
the education department of the University of Akron, is a member and
past-distinguished president of the Kiwanis Club of Medina Breakfast in
Medina, Ohio, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Lakewood, Ohio.
He served with honors as governor of the Ohio District and was the
district’s Key Club administrator for four years. He Past
Executive Director
of the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation. He is a George F. Hixson
Fellow, Tablet of Honor recipient and Heritage Society member of the
Kiwanis International Foundation.
Amendments
The following amendments were passed at Convention in Nashville.
Amendment 1:
Club
funds used to pay insurance premiums - passed Effective date:
October 1, 2009
This will allow clubs to pay insurance premiums out of either the
Administrative or Community Service portions of their budget - or to use a
combination of funds from both areas.
Amendment 2:
Freezing tiered dues levels in qualifying countries - passed
Effective date: October 1, 2010
This amendment will:
- provide economic relief
for clubs in countries qualifying for a lower dues tier;
- allow Kiwanis to continue
to grow in developing nations during difficult economic times.
Payment Schedule for payment
shall be as follows:
- Countries with per capita
income of $10,000 US or more pay $42 US;
- Countries with per capita
income of $5,000 US to $9,999 US pay $27 US;
- Countries with per capita
income of $4,999 or less US shall pay $18 US
Amendment 3:
Common billing date of
October 1 for all clubs - passed. Will be gradually changed
over a period of 3 years.
- Eliminates the confusion
of 3 payment dates for clubs: dues, magazine subscriptions &
insurance;
- Provides a timeline, over
several years, to gradually move forward club payments that are
currently due on March 31 and May 31;
Findlay's billing date is March 31
- Saves time and paperwork
for club secretaries and treasurers by reducing the amount of time,
paperwork and mailings required to update rosters and submit dues;
- Aligns with future plans
for online billing;
- Improves
District's cash flow.
Amendment 4:
Eliminate the
magazine exemption for spouses - failed
This
would have done away with members' choice of accepting or declining a
duplicate copy of the Kiwanis Magazine.
Because it failed, members still retain the choice.
